Why you should never listen to your friends…

As if our job isn’t hard enough, with large numbers of you out there being a little uncomfortable with the whole dental experience, we also have to combat the rather useful advice that you dole out to each other! Here are a few gems from our own experience…

‘To get at that wisdom tooth the dentist has to widen your mouth with a scalpel and then stitch it back together afterwards’ ………………………………………..Quite simply; no, he doesn’t!

‘I’d rather have a baby than a root canal treatment’…………………………………………….Should have come to us then, as root canal treatment should be painless, and having babies generally isn’t! Root canal treatment’s quicker than giving birth as well. And a root canal treatment shouldn’t need 18 years of attention afterwards either!

‘Those silver fillings give you Alzheimer’s’……………………………………………..Wrong again. The World Health Organisation have been studying this for years, and still have no evidence that suggests that we should stop using amalgam. There are also concerns about the chemicals in the white fillings being carcinogenic, so your best option is to avoid holes in the first place! In certain situations, replacement of amalgam fillings with white can be beneficial to a person’s overall wellbeing, but these cases are rare, and the costs generally quite high.

‘Diet Coke is fine for teeth’………………………………………………Oh yes, and so is paint stripper, toilet cleaner, and a big bag of toffees. Fizzy drinks of all descriptions are now keeping us in business almost single handed. Many of them are astonishingly addictive as well- those big corporations aren’t daft!

‘I only give my child natural fruit juices to drink’……………………………………Step away from the juice!!! For meal times, they’re fine, ( although some are very hard on the child’s digestive system ), but between meals. NO, No, NO, NO! Apple juice is more acidic than our friendly can of Coke, and much as many think they’re doing the right thing, water is still the best drink between meals for everyone.
